My Ego is a Top Performer
It took me eight long years just to find and decide on a name for this site.
Eight years of looking up synonyms upon synonyms of random words that could somehow encompass all that I am trying to achieve. Why? Well, my ego is a top performer.
In fact, if there is some sort of special designation, some sort of prize, a Grammy or an Oscar for my ego, it won them all years ago.
My ego is the voice in my head that says, “Nope, don’t bother, you don’t have anything to write about that people want to read.”
Egos have a secret superpower….
Judgement
Our egos wait in the wings, dressed in superhero capes, ready to dissect reality to tell us how much we wronged the world, or how much the world wronged us.
Our egos can’t help it, it’s in the design.
One’s ego, or sense of self is, at its core, the filter in which we as humans take in the external world.
The lens in which we see the world.
Our egos are the referee between the conscious and unconscious, the ultimate decider between what we perceive is reality and truth and what isn’t, and we and our egos are immensely biased.
Yep, I said it.
Like or not, we are all biased, and have individual versions of what is true, molded by our own interpretation of the outside world.
Reality is filtered by our biases and assumptions to create our version of it.
It’s how our egos, and our brains were created.
Our brains are perfectly designed masterpieces that work by creating neural pathways to shorten processing time, create shortcuts, and improve efficiency in every possible way.
Like any computer, in order for our brains to create shortcuts it has to make assumptions, find patterns, and connect the infinite amounts of data we are constantly exposed to.
This is further illustrated by Hermann von Helmholt, who concluded that “the stimuli the brain perceives are not copies of the perceived objects, they are symbols of them” in his theory of Unconscious Inference.
Our egos are like composers, choosing what lyrics to include or leave out, choosing the rhythm and the melody of a song.
Rather than pretend they don’t exist, let’s acknowledge the proverbial elephant in our minds, be grateful for the lessons they teach us about ourselves and each other, and learn to dance to its music.
Still wondering how I finally decided on the name of the site?
I changed my perspective….
